    Function

    • One of the biggest considerations in an apartment or other small space is making the space work. Many apartments consist of one large room that functions as kitchen, eating area and living space. You might also need this room to serve as a work area, office or craft room. Choose small scale, multifunctional furniture pieces. Look for a coffee table or ottoman with storage, side tables that can hide file boxes or store magazines and books and plenty of shelving. Mount open shelves to hold kitchen gear and office supplies. See "References."

    White Walls

    • Space is not the only challenge you pose in decorating an apartment. Most apartments come with white walls. While some landlords will allow you to paint your apartment, most will not. Hang artwork to bring color and life to your walls. A mirror might work well in an entry way or hallway. Consider using fabric, tacked near the ceiling, to add color to your walls. You might also opt to hang your window curtains high and choose curtains that fall to the floor. Try vinyl wall decals to add personality and style to your walls. These decals apply easily and peel away with minimal damage to the wall. See "References."

    Arranging Furniture

    • Creating pleasing furniture arrangements in your apartment is one of the key steps to making your apartment a comfortable place to live. Think in terms of function as you arrange furniture. You should consider traffic patterns and be sure that there is an adequate walking path between doors and through the rooms. Arrange your living area in a way that is comfortable for conversation. A small scale sofa and two occasional chairs are a good choice for an apartment living room. Place a small desk in a nook or corner if needed. Add a small table or shelving unit near the door for your keys, bags and other daily necessities.

    Accessories

    • Add a punch of color and personality with home accessories. Look for lamps, draperies, pillows and table linens that bring your own style into your apartment. (See "References.") Use area rugs that coordinate with your furniture and accessories to delineate spaces in your apartment. Consider arranging your living room furnishings around one rug and your dining or office area around another.
