How to Keep a Marriage – Together We Win

Victory in the Locker Room!

This past March, the University of Connecticut basketball team stormed into their locker room with cheers and shouts of jubilation that shook the whole complex.  "We did it, we did it!  We are the National Champs!  I knew we could do it!  Way to shoot the ball!  How about our defense?  Are we good or what?"

Coach Calhoun gets their attention and says, "You guys are the best!  You played like a team; you stuck together when we were down and never gave up."

The cheers, laughter, and tears of emotion once again erupted with uncontrollable laughter and gratefulness for each other.  Even though there were stars on the team, they all agreed that it was a team win.  No one criticized or blamed other players.  They just hugged, laughed, and cried together.

So, this is the way it looks and feels when married couples "win" together!

In the previous lesson, we talked about the importance of each partner having an individual life vision, a vision each wants life to be like over the coming years.  I've encouraged you to identify your life vision, clarify it, write it down, and go for it!

But there is so much more to it than this.  I'm sure that the individual players all had personal goals that they wanted to achieve.  That was very important to the team.  If the individual players had no personal aspirations or goals, if they had not devoted all they had toward their individual success, there would have been no championship trophy and no celebration.

Yes there were outstanding athletes and future NBA stars, but they would have lost, no matter how good they were.  But together, they pulled it off.

So when individuals marry, they are still individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses, but when they blend their visions together, become a team and work hard, nothing can stop them.

So what about the individual goals and ambitions?  They become areas of growth and challenge. This is so powerful!  When difficulty comes, there is no fear of separation or divorce because they now have a couple visions that cannot be stopped.  They see so much more than their individual wants and desires.  They see their goals, their future and know that no matter what, they will win together!!!
