Advantages and Disadvantages of Pseudoscience
- One of the largest disadvantages of pseudoscience lay in testing. In most circumstances, either the particular subject can't be tested, hasn't been tested or has failed all professional scientific tests. Sometimes private tests are performed; however, legitimate studies rarely accompany a pseudoscience. Topics, such as psychic abilities, are easily testable in lab circumstances, yet have never revealed results that put an end to the debate.
- There are always groups within populations that have a bit more trust and gullibility when it comes to news and learning. Although many countries, including the United States, allow information to be spread freely, some people rarely take into account the source of the information. This can lead to widespread acceptance of false news that has been manipulated or has presented inaccurate results. A common widespread pseudoscience is astrology, which, according to a Newport and Strausberg study from 2001, more than 25 percent of the population believes is true.
- Famous world-renown scientists, such as Albert Einstein, lived off the idea that creativity is far more important than basic intelligence. Nearly any topic that has become a proven science has at one point in time been widely refuted. Topics, such as UFOs, are considered pseudoscience; however, widespread belief among scientists holds that life-forms likely exist at least on the microscopic level given the right conditions. Sometimes an idea is unprovable presently, but might someday become provable. The concepts of genetics, telephones and air travel might have once upon a time been considered unprovable pseudosciences.
- There's no shortage of subjects in pseudoscience. Some of the most prevalent include psychics, astrology and UFOs. Others include the idea of life after death, voodoo and many forms of therapeutic healing. Faith healing is a common pseudoscience that has been around for thousands of years, and reincarnation has been built into many culture's literature since the dawn of writing.
