No other vitamin is as closely associated with acne relief as is vitamin A.
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that occurs in two forms: preformed vitamin A and provitamin A, or carotene.
Preformed vitamin A usually is obtained from animal tissues where the animal has already metabolized the provitamin A found in its food into vitamin A.
One of the best natural sources of preformed vitamin A is fish-liver oil.
Provitamin A, or carotene must be converted into vitamin A before the body can use it.
Only about one third of the vitamin A in carotene is converted by the body so it is relatively inefficient.
Carotene is found in carrots, but in even higher concentrations in green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, kale and beet greens.
It is also found in cantaloupe and sweet potato.
Vitamin A should always be taken with vitamins C, E, F, and the B complex for maximum acne fighting effect.
As mentioned earlier, vitamin A is stored in the body's fat cells so it can be toxic.
The RDA of vitamin A is 2,500 - 3,000 IU for adults.
Therapeutic levels for acne treatment have been used in excess of 25,000 IU but these should only be taken in consultation with your doctor.
