    Documentation

    • State rules will vary, but generally the administrator of the inspection may need to see repair or part purchase documentation. Receipts dispel any suspicion of parts or vehicle theft. Gather all repair records to present them, if requested, at the inspection or at the office.

    Schedule an Appointment

    • Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles, Office of the Secretary of State or other applicable vehicle titling entity in your state for a list of approved inspection facilities. An authorized agent checks the vehicle for road safety and conducts a comprehensive examination of engine, drive train and other vital systems. The inspection carries a fee, variable by state. If the car does not pass, you will have to make additional repairs.

    Refile

    • Re-register the vehicle or amend the title after a successful inspection. Usually you will need to present your driver's license, vehicle registration or title and registration fees. Some states, such as Michigan, classify the new title as "Rebuilt Salvage," while others, like Arizona, designate them as "Restored Salvage." Once inspected and re-titled, the vehicle may return to the road with a license plate.
