Do-It-Yourself Canopy for Kids
- 1). Take the measurements of the bed from post to post. Measure the length and the width of the bed. Make sure to measure up and over the frame, if you have one on the bed.
- 2). Add two inches to your measurements all the way around to allow for hemming. Purchase additional fabric if you want to include a ruffle around the edge of the canopy. Measure all around the posts of the canopy and double that measurement to figure out how much fabric you will need for the ruffle.
- 3). Wash, dry and iron your fabric before cutting.
- 4). Cut your fabric to the necessary measurements. Cut two lengths of fabric and sew them together lengthwise if you cannot find fabric that is wide enough to fit all the way across as a canopy.
- 5). Lay the fabric on your work surface with the right side facing down. Fold all four edges under twice at ½ inch each time to hide the raw edges. Pin the fold to hold the fabric and sew it in place.
- 6). Cut eight 10-inch lengths of ribbon. Layer two lengths of the ribbon one on top of the other and pin them to the underside of one of the corners of the canopy. Stitch to hold them in place.
- 7). Repeat with the three remaining corners and six remaining lengths of ribbon.
- 8). Add the ruffle at this point if you want one. Sew 10-inch-wide strips together until you get your necessary length as determined in Step 2. Sew the first and the last strips together.
- 9). Hem one edge of the ruffle by folding under the raw edges and stitching. Put gathering stitches in the other edge of the ruffle. Make sure to leave extra long threads that will allow you to gather the fabric.
- 10
Pin the ruffle to the canopy with the right sides together. Pin so that the ruffle is double the length of the canopy sides. - 11
Pull the gathering threads and spread out the gathers evenly on each side of the canopy. Use plenty of pins to hold the gathers in place. Sew the ruffle to the canopy. - 12
Trim any excess threads to finish your canopy. Use the ribbons to tie the canopy to the bed posts or the canopy frame.
