How to Make Punchneedle Rugs
- 1). Determine what size rug you want to make. You need to make sure that you can reach the middle of the rug with both hands comfortably.
- 2). Stretch the burlap over the frame and staple it in place. Alternate the staples from side to side and top to bottom until the burlap is pulled taut.
- 3). Draw your pattern onto the burlap with a black marker. Then take colored markers and color in the sections that are going to be different colors.
- 1). Start in the center and work your way outwards. Holding the punch needle in your right hand and yarn in your left. Hold the yarn underneath the frame and the punch needle above the frame.
- 2). Push the punch through the burlap. Put the yarn over the needle and drag it down the needle so that it catches on the bottom hook.
- 3). Pull the yarn through the burlap and leave a tail of yarn.
- 4). Insert the needle into the burlap on the right side of the tail of yarn. With the hand that is holding the yarn, slide a loop onto the hook and pull the loop through the burlap until you have about an inch showing. With the hand that is under the burlap, pull the yarn until you have about one-quarter inch of yarn showing.
- 5). Insert the needle back into the burlap to the right of the previous loop. Repeat the slide and pull process. Keep repeating this process for the entire rug. The loops of yarn should be close together, but not so close that there is a lump of yarn on the back of the burlap.
- 6). When you run out of yarn or need to switch colors, pull a tail of yarn through the burlap and insert the needle back into the same hole as the tail. Pull a new tail of yarn through the burlap and continue your rug where you left off.
- 1). Now that your rug is complete, cut all the tails of yarn so that they are even with the loops of yarn.
- 2). Remove the burlap from the frame. Be careful not rip the burlap when your taking out the staples.
- 3). Turn your rug over so that the back is facing up and fold over the excess burlap and whip stitch it to the back of the burlap. Use the same colored thread for the whip stitching as your yarn color.
