Louisiana Law on Unsecured Wireless Internet
- In June 2009, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal signed into law nine pieces of legislation designed to "Crack down on Sexual Predators and Protect Louisiana's Children." One of those laws, SB 145 introduced by Louisiana Sen. A.G. Crowe, prohibits unauthorized use of unsecured wireless networks to download or distribute child pornography.
- Upon signing the new law, Jindal said, "This new law will be a very important tool for helping law enforcement arrest and prosecute sex predators using the Internet, which can lead to them discovering other, more severe crimes -- and aid prosecutors in bringing them to justice."
- The Louisiana Law Review examined additional potential concerns regarding the use of open wireless networks to commit other crimes - such as identity theft or causing damage to another person or business's computer systems. The Review anticipates that in coming years, businesses will want to protect their intellectual property and reputation by possibly backing additional anti-piggybacking laws.
