How to Hook Up DJ Amplifiers

    Connections

    • 1). Plug your amplifier into an available outlet. Make certain that no major appliances or other power-hogging devices are on the same circuit as these can cause your amp to work harder than it is designed to, resulting in damage to itself and equipment connected to it. Keep the power off at this time.

    • 2). On the back panel, take notice of the many ports. Input ports are used to connect the devices you are using to stream music or play an instrument. Such devices may require RCA cables, (two plugs, red & white) XLR cables, (3 pronged microphone cords) or 1/4" cables (a single plug). Most amplifiers come equipped to handle any or all of these. Connect your device(s) now, making sure they fit snugly.

    • 3). Connect your speakers to the appropriate port(s) in the output section of the back panel. Like your music devices, speakers, too, have diverse connections, many of which use the very same as the inputs (RCA, XLR or 1/4"). There are additional types as well, such as "banana plugs," which ensure proper polarity when grounded. Check with your speaker's manufacturer for more information.

    • 4). Once all of your devices are properly connected, power on your input device(s) first, and then your amp. Make sure all of your levels are down, especially gains, volume and master outs. This prevents noise from "spiking" when your amplifier powers up.

    • 5). Gently raise the gains on your amplifier to around half, which is usually "noon" if your amp uses rotary knobs. Play something on your input device to hear the sound. Adjust the volume if possible on the device before increasing the gains on your amp. Remember, gains "magnify" the sound of your device. Don't think of them as "volume." Doing so will preserve the life and integrity of your amp.
