First among them is Hygeia. A daughter to Aesculapius, she actually symbolizes the forces of cleanliness, medicine and healing. Having a dad known for raising dead people isn't really much of a credential or is it? Considered as a femme deity of healing and the prevention of disease and consistent good health, she puts utmost importance on the power of healing through cleanliness. Hygeia originated the idea of washing patients with soap and water. She is often acknowledged for the curative skills of physicians and nursing professionals. She is known as a practical goddess who believes in rest, healthy diet, cleanliness, and medicines for good health. She is also an advocate of pain and disease prevention which is what most holistic practitioners promote nowadays.

Next is Angitia. Known to be a goddess of health and healing, even of snakes! Snakes, in the ancient Roman mythology are often linked with the art of healing. Angitia is famous for healing people who have been poisoned most specially those who were bitten by a snake. Her spoken charms are known to kill serpents as well. She is also well-known for her knowledge on healing herbs which is quite a trend in our time as more and more are turning to alternative medicine using herbal as a natural way to heal certain diseases.

Last but not the least is Salus. She is actually considered as a Roman goddess of health and prosperity for the state and also to the individual. She is also often associated with Hygeia, although their type of work is very different in a lot of ways.  Sometimes, Salus is even portrayed with a steering oar in the left hand which signifies her very important role in acting as a guide to a healthy life of the emperor.  Salus is also well known for being a protector of personal health.

Has this been helpful making a choice as to who is the true goddess of health and healing? Well, the above information is just for the Roman Mythology part. We have not even included the African, Aztec, Celtic, Chinese, Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Hindu, Hittite, Inuit, Japanese, Maya, Mesopotamian, Native American, Norse, Persian, Phoenician, Sami, Slavic, Thracian, Yoruba and Afro-American Mythology.
