    • 1). Prepare the garden soil in the fall for sowing the seeds in the spring. Amend the soil by digging in an ample amount of organic compost or processed manure to a depth of 12 to 18 inches.

    • 2). Soak the sweet pea seeds in a small jar of warm water for two to six hours just prior to planting to promote germination. Stir or jostle the seeds to make sure they are all immersed.

    • 3). Pour the seeds out of the jar onto some paper towels.

    • 4). Sow the seeds directly into the garden soil 1 to 2 inches deep and cover them with soil. Firm the soil lightly and water until the soil is moist, but not soggy. Keep the soil moist at all times.

    • 5). Thin seedlings to 4 to 6 inches apart, keeping the healthiest seedlings.

    • 6). Place a sturdy vertical trellis or twine support near the planted seeds.

    • 7). Train the seedlings to climb on the support or trellis when they are 4 to 5 inches tall. Gently grasp each of the tendril vines and attach them to the support, being careful not to damage them.

    • 8). Water regularly during the growing season; keep the soil moist but not soggy.

    • 9). Fertilize with a 10-20-10 fertilizer, which is high in phosphorus, to promote blossom growth.
