DIY: Home Window Tint

    Preparation

    • The first thing you will need to decide on is the color and the opacity of the tint you want. Tints come in a variety of different colors, so make sure you get one which will complement your house. Once you have selected your tint, measure all of your windows. You will want to be as accurate on the square footage as possible as you will be purchasing the tint by the square foot. Whatever your measurements are, add one inch to each one. This will allow you to have an overlap and will help getting the tint into all of the window seams. It is extremely hard to create invisible seams in your tint so having accurate measurements will help the tint look seamless on your windows.

    Installing the tint

    • Once you have made your measurements, purchase your tint. You may want to get extra tint in case you mess up on any part of this process. The first thing you will want to do is to thoroughly clean your windows. A good solution to try is baby shampoo and distilled water (1/4 tsp. to 1 qt. of the water). Spray the solution onto the window and dry with a lint free cloth. Once the window is cleaned, you will be ready to apply the tint.

For this, you will want to begin by wetting down the window thoroughly. This will help the tint to stick to the window. Most film will have a sticky side and smooth side. Wet the sticky side of the film as well, then apply the wet sticky side to the wet window. Match the top of the film to the top of the window and anchor the film to the top of the window by running hard plastic along it (an old credit card works perfectly for this). Using the same plastic piece, remove all the water from behind the film by running it along the surface of the film from top to bottom. This should also remove all air bubbles in the tint. Finally cut away any excess film you have on the sides using an X-acto knife.
