How to Make Buckwheat Seed Pillows

    • 1). Buy buckwheat seeds at a local craft store or order them online. Order whole seeds, not buckwheat hulls. Hulls may catch fire if microwaved and do not hold the heat as well.

    • 2). Cut two rectangles in the size you want to make your pillow from a cloth made of natural fibers. For example, cut a 21-inch by 7-inch rectangle or a 21-by-15-inch rectangle as these are common sizes for pillows.

    • 3). Pin the two rectangles together, right-sides facing. Pin around the edges so that they are flush and will not shift while you are sewing.

    • 4). Sew completely around three of the four sides. Sew three-quarters of the fourth side, leaving a 4-to-6-inch opening for turning and filling the pillow.

    • 5). Turn the pillow by pulling the right side of the cloth up through the 4-to-6-inch gap.

    • 6). Press the pillow flat, making sure the pillow is completely turned and the corners are square.

    • 7). Fill the pillow with buckwheat seed to the level of firmness desired. The more buckwheat seed added, the firmer the pillow becomes. If the pillow is made too firm it will not easily conform to the shape of the body part you place it on.

    • 8). Stitch the 4- to 6-inch opening closed.
