Paleo Foods - Choosing the Right Core Foods

Are you trying to determine what the best Paleo foods are? The Paleo diet is based on what the caveman would have eaten; foods that are natural and unprocessed. These are the foods that are strongly recommended to eat; however, you choose to alter the diet if necessary and this is completely at your discretion.
 
Meat - More and more of our foods today go through some sort of unnatural process. It's these processes, and others too, that are harming our bodies. Paleo foods are meant to be the best for the body; the foods that were found naturally thousands and thousands of years ago. A basic food is lean meat. This is something that you already buy, and if so you are off to a great start. You can choose meats such as: beef, flank steak and London broil as well as lean pork, chicken and turkey. You can include 6 eggs to your weekly diet too.
 
Fish - What about seafood as Paleo foods? Fish is a definite must have and there are a number of species you can choose from that can be fixed any number of ways and taste great. Some of the options you can choose from are:
 
  • Bass/Striped Bass
  • Cod
  • Eel
  • Haddock
  • Halibut
  • Mackerel
  • Red snapper
  • Salmon
  • Tuna

 
When choosing fish, just about any fish available can be on the diet. You can even opt for certain shell fish such as clams and scallops, and lobster and shrimp. Keep in mind that these can't be doused in butter, battered or fried in oil. Keep it simple and healthy; like the caveman would.
 
Fruits and Vegetables - These are perfect Paleo foods as well and there are so many options available. Almost all fruits are allowed, so now is the time to try one of those fruits you've been wanting taste; fruits from apricots to star fruit. In regards to vegetables, almost all are allowed. Root vegetables are strongly encouraged except for potatoes. It's time to add flavor with:
 
  • Artichokes
  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Celery
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Peppers
  • Pumpkin/squash

 
By the way, root vegetables are those that the food itself grows in the ground like carrots. Potatoes are discouraged because they are very high in bad carbohydrates. You are trying to get healthy and lose weight not make things worse.
 
Nuts and Seeds - We typically choose these for snacks and there is nothing wrong with that as long as they are unsalted. The nuts that are allowed on the Paleo diet can be eaten separately or added to any number of recipes to enhance the flavor of the foods. Some nuts and seeds you can enjoy are:
 
  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Pine nuts
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Sunflower seeds

 
Foods to stay away from include those that are cereal grains, dairy products, legumes, starchy vegetables, sweets, sodas, fatty meats and those foods that have a high salt content. These are the foods that have high fat, sodium and sugars that are good only to a certain extent and are best in their natural form. It will be easy, take it one food at a time.
