How To Grow Mushrooms Outside

    • 1). Select the type of mushrooms that you most like to eat. Mushroom kits are available for shiitakes, oysters, button and many other types.

    • 2). Take the time to read the instructions that came with your kit. What works for one type of mushroom growing will not necessarily work for a different type.

    • 3). Soak the mushroom growing medium with water. For shiitakes, the medium will likely be an oak log. Oysters are grown in bags filled with sawdust or wood shavings. Button mushrooms are grown in blocks of compressed wood and wood byproducts.

    • 4). Cover the wet medium with the plastic that came with the kit. From the instructions, determine how long to incubate the mushroom spores.

    • 5). Remove the plastic after the specified time period. Place the kit in the proper environment to wait for the mushrooms to grow. For shiitakes and oysters, this can be a sunny area anywhere in your backyard. Button mushrooms prefer darker areas, so a corner of the garage, a basement or a shady portion of the yard works well.

    • 6). Allow up to two weeks for the first mushroom to begin to appear on the growing medium. Use a sharp knife or scissors to harvest the mushrooms when they begin to reach the desired size.
