How to Repair a Panasonic VCR

    • 1). Ensure that the power plug is securely connected to the power outlet. Switch outlets, if possible--and, if connected to a surge protector, then make sure that it is on. If the device is in a too confining space, then it may overheat and cause it to shut off. Unplug it for at least four hours to let it soft reset. With a screwdriver the panel can be removed to verify if the power supply smells burnt, which could be a sign that it has burnt out.

    • 2). Make sure the video cables are firmly secured from the VCR to the television. Ensure the television has the right input selected to show the video being played or the channel being watched. If the composite video cable is defective or damaged, it must be replaced.

    • 3). Clean the VCR head if the VHS being played is fuzzy or distorted. Adjust the tracking using the remote or the tracking setting in the menu. Use a dry tape VHS cleaner to avoid getting chemicals into the system. If the VHS cleaner is not helpful, the video heads can be manual cleaned by opening the VCR casing. Locate the video heads and use a cotton swab to carefully remove loose debris and dust.

    • 4). Break off the preventive recording tab to be able to reuse VHS tapes. Set the right recording speed for the VHS to ensure the necessary recording time is there. If the channel or show required is not recording correctly and is set up using the recording timer, then ensure that the right time is set on the VCR.
