Hip Bursitis Diagnosis

    Physical Examination

    • Physicians may use their hands to confirm hip tenderness. This is done while the patient is lying on the side. Patients may be asked for specifics about hip pain, such as pain time frame and intensity levels. Diagnostic testing may be ordered for confirmation.

    Diagnostic Procedures of the Hips

    • Diagnosing hip pain can include basic X-rays and more advanced diagnostic tests. X-rays may be used to obtain hip images on film. Bone densitometry provides a non-invasive method to show hip bone mass and any changes.

    Benefits

    • Patients may try self-care without positive results. During an office visit, diagnosis allows physicians to create a hip bursitis treatment plan, which may include activity modification, prescription medications and surgical treatment.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Patients with hip pain and inflammation may prevent symptoms. One way is to perform warm-up exercises before sports activities. Some other preventive measures include strengthening leg muscles and maintaining weight.

    Risk Factors

    • Hip bursitis may occur at any age with different factors--some of the most common are rheumatoid arthritis, hip bone spurs and hip injuries. Bursitis may be treated with positive results.
