How to Make Newborn Dolls Out of Clay

Creating the armature for the body

    • 1). Determine the size you want your doll to be and cut a strip of craft wire that equals three times that length. Bend the wire in half and fashion a wire "skeleton" or armature for your doll. Twist the wire to form legs, feet, torso, arms and hands.

    • 2). Roll out sections of clay for each body part.

    • 3). Wrap clay around the armature.

    • 4). Using fingers and/or tools, define your body. Add details such as toes, fingers, nipples, creases, knees, elbows and bellybutton.

    Forming the head and finishing

Set the completed body aside and gather the sucker stick, foil and masking tape. Form a ball of aluminum foil onto the end of the sucker stick. This will become the "skull" of your baby. Try looking at a picture of a skull for proper shape. Using the handle of a small paint brush, press an indent horizontally into the middle of the front of the skull. This will help with placement of the eyes. Cover the foil with strips of masking tape to come down to meet the sucker stick. This will help the clay grasp better than the foil surface alone.

      Forming the head

Roll out another piece of clay and shape two pancake slabs that will cover the front and back of the skull.
You can consider several options when developing the eyes. You can create your doll with closed eyes, you can purchase glass or acrylic eyes to place on your doll, or you can fashion your own eyes from two small balls of white clay, half baked and then painted and sealed with a gloss to resemble the cornea. I would say that glass or homemade eyes, if done carefully and correctly, add the most realism and character to your doll.
Use small, round, pancake pieces of clay to build up the forehead, eyebrows, cheeks, nose, lips and chin. Define the facial features.
Apply hair to your baby or sculpt a few curls out of clay around the face.

Attach your completed baby head to the finished body. Bake on an oven safe glass dish at the manufacturer's specified time and temperature.

      Make-up brush

Use a make-up brush and eye shadow or other pigmented make-up to "blush" your baby's delicate parts, including cheeks, knees, nipples, bellybutton, top of ears and so on. You can use a fine tipped paint brush to define the eyebrows and shade creases in the baby's body by using a custom mixture of acrylic paints.

Add finishing touches, such as a diaper, clothing and accessories if desired. Display your delicate work of art for all to admire.
