Ethics Law & the Judicial System
- Ethics laws help govern the morality of a society. They set parameters for many business and government operations. Members of the judicial system must interpret written laws and decide what is the right or moral choice to make.
- In the judicial system, the American Bar Association created a model set of rules called the Code of Professional Responsibility. On the basis of these rules, individual state bar associations set ethical mandates for attorneys, judges and court personnel. Attorneys can be punished or disbarred if they operate outside these codes of legal ethics.
- The Code of Professional Responsibility was created with a preamble, a statement of scope and 58 rules to which lawyers must adhere. The code is divided into three sections, covering disciplinary rules, canons and ethical considerations. Each section has individual goals and responsibilities that lawyers must meet.
