  • 1). Lay drop cloths down around your work area. Cover any furniture that cannot be removed from the room, and tape off any trim or windows that you do not want to cover with paint.

  • 2). Rough the surface of your semi-gloss walls, using 100-grit sandpaper on a pole sander. You do not have to sand down to bare wall, just remove the gloss of the paint.

  • 3). Wipe walls with a tacky cloth, which is made to remove dust and dirt. You can find this at the home improvement store where you purchase your paint.

  • 4). Cover the walls with a coat of primer. Let the primer dry according to the directions on the can.

  • 5). Paint walls with your first coat of paint. Brush strokes in the same direction, applying paint evenly and in small sections at a time. Let dry.

  • 6). Brush or roll on the second coat of paint. Always start at the top of the walls and work your way down. Load the brush or roller evenly with paint, and brush in even strokes. Let dry.
