History

• The use of copper dates back more than 10,000 years, placing it among the world's first metal construction materials. Copper sinks are primarily made in Mexico, India and the United States. The methods used today to construct copper sinks go back hundreds of years. Hand-hammered copper sinks were made centuries ago, mostly in Mexico. Some copper sinks are still hand-crafted this way today, although other modern methods are more common.
  
  

Types

• Today, copper sinks are available with either smooth or hammered surfaces. Hammered surfaces are ideal for kitchen use since they hide nicks and dents caused by pots and pans. Copper sinks are also available in styles known as under mount or farmhouse, which is basically an over mount sink. The farmhouse style has a large lip on the front to help it fit as an over mount sink. It is best to evaluate the style that you are looking for to help coordinate with your decor.
  
  

Finishes

• There are four different types of common copper finishes. Dark smoke and Rio Grande finishes offer the deepest colors, while cafe natural is the lightest color that copper comes in. Matte copper offers a smoother finish, while a nickel finish looks similar to stainless steel.
  
  

Care

• Proper care will ensure that your copper sink has a long life. Copper gradually deepens to a warmer color over time, so do not use any abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that could mar the surface. Additionally, you should not use a copper cleaner on your sink, as these cleaners could dull the surface.
  
  

Preventive Maintenance

• Thoroughly wipe the sink basin and copper drain clean with a soft microfiber cloth after each use. If standing water remains on copper for a long period of time, it could stain or mar the surface. Apply a copper wax sealant at least three or four times per year to help repel water from the sink's surface. Apply a small amount of this wax with a soft cloth and evenly apply it all over the sink basin, then rinse and drain.
