    • 1). Remove the doors, drawers and hardware from your cabinets. Mark each door front and drawer with a number in an inconspicuous spot so you will know where to return it.

    • 2). Coat the cabinet frames, doors and drawers with paint stripper. Allow the paint stripper to seep into the polyurethane for 20 to 30 minutes. Begin wiping away the old polyurethane with rags, using steel wool to work on tough spots.

    • 3). Sand the frames and flat parts of the doors with a palm sander, using fine-grit sand paper. Sanding should remove any remaining polyurethane. Use sheets of sand paper for rounded areas.

    • 4). Use damp rags to remove sanding dust and any remaining paint stripper.

    • 5). Brush or rag on stain, using a clean rag to wipe off any excess. Continue adding layers of stain until you get the color you are trying to achieve.

    • 6). Seal the cabinets with polyurethane. For doors and drawers that were removed, use spray polyurethane for quicker application. Spray polyurethane should only be used in well-ventilated areas. Use a foam roller to apply polyurethane to the frames of the cabinets.
