• You can design and make your own vinyl decals fairly easily, using a vinyl cutter and photo editing software. The downside is that quality vinyl cutters can cost upwards of $500.
  
  If you are a beginner, purchase a 24-inch cutter, which allows some room for error. You will also have to obtain vinyl rolls, all of which can be purchased via the Internet (try UScutterdirect.com).
  
  Design your decal using the accompanying photo editing software, insert the amount of vinyl you need for your decal and then feed it through the cutter (leaving a couple of extra inches for room for error). After you press "Cut," the machine will begin to cut the design. Wait until it is finished, and then cut off any excess that the machine leaves over with an X-Acto knife.
  
  

Shapes

• Consider shapes or designs that complement the theme of your bedroom or home. If your room or home has a lot of flowers, consider small flowers over your bed. You can even use vinyl decals to brighten up a child's room with temporary, but colorful, scenes of unicorns, teddy bears or glow-in-the-dark stars.
  
  

Murals

• If you live in an apartment, you may make a mural with your vinyl cutter or purchase a large one. Some popular mural decals include beach scenes, life-size trees and grass, as well as chandeliers and old-fashioned lamp posts. These all bring dull walls to life.
