How to Prune Hulane Clematis
- 1). Prune young clematis plants periodically throughout the first year after planting. Maintain plant height of 18 to 24 inches to allow the roots to become fully established and strong enough to support taller heights. Make the cuts with pruning shears.
- 2). Evaluate Huldine clematis in early spring, checking for symptoms of disease and identifying dead or damaged limbs. Ideal pruning time for clematis is determined by the season in which the plant blooms. Huldine clematis is in pruning group "C," which blooms throughout summer and early fall. Pruning in early spring will allow the plant time to recover while stimulating the plant to produce more flowers and increase new growth.
- 3). Remove all damaged, dead or diseased wood from the clematis. Sharp pruning shears or loppers will efficiently accomplish the task.
- 4). Cut each and every stem of the clematis. Individual stems should be cut back to heights of 12 to 18 inches. Huldine is a vigorously growing species of clematis; hard pruning will yield the most abundant flowering and encourage plant growth.
- 5). Periodically inspect the plant. If symptoms of disease or damage are noticed, prune them off at any time.
