How to Propagate Turmeric
- 1). Create a suitable growing environment for turmeric. Turmeric needs 8 to 10 months to mature, and cannot tolerate temperatures below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. In most zones of the United States (garden zones cooler than 7b), this means that you can only grow turmeric indoors, or possibly in a heated greenhouse.
- 2). Purchase fresh turmeric rhizomes from a grocery store or online. These are the same fresh roots that are sold and used for cooking. Choose roots with buds on the sides if possible.
- 3). Separate the rhizome into individual fingers. Plant each finger about 2 inches deep in a shallow pot filled with well-draining soil, such as potting soil mixed with vermiculite or sand.
- 4). Keep the soil damp but not wet. Look for shoots in about two months. After the turmeric roots sprout, keep them in partial sun, and feel free to take them outdoors in the same conditions on hot days.
- 5). Dig up the turmeric rhizomes after 8 to 10 months for use, when the stalks of the plant start to dry out.
