It's based on the idea of an "emotional scale" that ranges from complete indifference and apathy on one end to the extreme emotions like love and hate on the other end.
  People on the apathy end tend to not get much reaction while those on the intense side get a lot of reaction.
You can find out where you stand on your ex's scale by seeing how he responds to your attempts at contacting him, as well as by how much HE tries to contact YOU.
  If his reception is pretty grim, and he doesn't really return your messages or try to communicate with you of his own accord, then you're probably lower on his scale than is desirable to get him back...
but you still can if you work at it.
The alternative is far better for you, because if he's good about returning your calls or seems to have no problems contacting you of his own volition, that means he still pictures you as a part of his life.
  That's a great gateway back to his heart because it means a part of him needs you in his life, and that part of him can be a lessened form of the love you two once shared that can be brought back to full force with the right strategy.
