Don't Give Up on Your Resolutions
How to Avoid Giving Up on Your Resolutions
How many times have you set out to achieve a goal at the beginning of the year, only to forget about it or give up just a few weeks in?
It seems, by nature, we aren't very good at keeping our resolutions. Here are some simple and effective tips you can put into to practice to help you achieve your goals.
Don't Take on Too Much
The best goals are the small ones which eventually lead to a big return. Instead of just saying "I want to give up smoking", break this one big goal down into smaller and more manageable goals. Work out the steps required in order to achieve your resolution and then tackle them one at a time. Without a clear path, you will easily feel lost and overwhelmed.
Make it Public
If possible share your resolution with friends and family. This way you'll have a support group to fall back onto when you start letting your resolution slip. A good nag now and then from the people around you is a good idea.
You can also pair up with a buddy and try and achieve the resolution together. If you're both aiming for the same goal, you'll be able to work with and motivate each other. Plus, a friendly competition between you and your buddy will also drive you further to achieve goals.
Keep a Tally
One of the most effective ways to keep track of your resolutions is a paper tally system. Simply place mark down at the end of the day on a paper note (that kept in a visible place) if you have successfully achieved your goal for that day. If you miss one day, the note has to be thrown away and you need to start again. Be hard on yourself and don't cheat. It may be annoying to start again, but if you miss one day, this will lead to one week, that will turn into one month etc etc. Set yourself a goal of how many days in a row you want to achieve. 30 days is a reasonable number and should be long enough to form a habit.
Set Yourself Reminders
There are plenty of free tools you can use that will send you reminders. My favourite, Task.fm (www.task.fm) can send SMS, email and phone call reminders. Setup a weekly reminder, gently nagging you to stay on track. The worst thing that can happen is forgetting your resolution.
So there you have some simple and easy things you can do to achieve your goals.
