Pros & Cons of Deer Hunting
- The first reason given by hunting advocates is that the herd needs to be controlled. Deer that are too numerous literally eat themselves out of house and home, and starvation results.
- Overpopulation of deer inevitably results in disease spreading through the herd. Deer are social animals but not designed to be crowded.
- Most deer hunters adhere to the ethics of hunting for food. Deer meat is an excellent source of protein and can be very good when it's properly cooked.
- At one time deer were hunted to extinction in Ohio. Deer were reintroduced, and Ohio now enjoys are large herd. Over-harvesting of deer can lead to their becoming an endangered species.
- The pros and cons of deer hunting are never so evident as when a living deer is admired. Animal lovers have a point when they say that deer are too beautiful to shoot. Destroying as graceful and gentle a creature as a deer is an indictment on our tendency to be cruel to animals.
- Shooting a deer with a gun or a bow and arrow certainly causes suffering. A clean shot isn't always possible, and quite often a deer will survive and be maimed.
