Understanding the basics of what computer forensics is and what it entails is easy enough. Realizing that its a great career opportunity and that the job market for those with computer forensics training is going to be blossoming in the coming years is something thats easy to see as well. However, when one first thinks about going into this type of training, he or she doesnt always know what the daily tasks could include and what to expect when they are on the job. With so many different types of cyber crimes committed nowadays, it can be difficult to narrow down the duties of a computer forensics specialist. However, most of the investigations are going to follow the same procedure.

The forensic specialist needs to set up a crime scene when recovering the computer devices. This means that they will have to photograph and document the evidence that they collect at the scene. This could include the computers, phones, disks, and other items brought into evidence. Depending on the state of the computer, the investigator may handle evidence gathering differently. For example, with a running computer, the specialist might try to get information from any open and running applications on the computer, and only then will he or she shut the computer down to make sure that no data is lost. They have to be very careful when doing this.

After proper documentation and shutdown, the computer or other device goes to the forensics lab, where the investigator will then be able to image the system, which means that they will make a duplicate of it. This will preserve data in the original so that the specialists can freely go through the duplicate system without fear of losing something due to a trap laid by the criminal. The specialist will then record and report on the data and evidence found during the investigation.

Of course, some days and cases are going to be different from others. You may find that your expertise means that you will have to be on the witness stand as an expert too. One you undergo computer forensics training, you will discover many different aspects to your job that include far more than just dealing with technology.

Becoming a computer forensics specialist can be one of the best decisions you will ever make. Find a school that will be able to offer you all the training you need to get a great job after graduation.
