Once you spend any time making fused glass jewelry, you will start to accumulate a fair amount of glass scraps. One interesting way to recycle glass scraps is to turn them into frit, a mix of small to medium sized glass pieces used to decorate fused glass objects. Pictured is a heart-shaped fused glass pendant I made and then ornamented with a mix of various color frit.
To make frit, you will need the following:

Torch
Bowl of water
Long handled tweezers
scraps of fused glass

1. Turn on your torch. (You might want to attach the torch to your work bench so your hands are free - though this isn’t a must).
2. Now, using the long handled tweezers, hold a piece of scrap glass in the flame. It will take a few seconds before you see the glass start to get red and soften just a bit.

3. When it gets red, but it is not dripping, drop it into your bowl of water. Snap, crackle, pop!

You have frit.

This is not the only way to make frit. For larger amounts of frit, you can heat large pieces of glass inside a kiln, take it out, and drop it in a bucket of water. One smart glass artist created his own frit maker using a garbage disposal bolted into a bucket. Also, if you want your frit to be more evenly sized, or if you need a lot of it, you can also purchase frit already made.

Glass frit is simple to make and can add interesting elements of color to fused glass jewelry components. Simply sprinkle it on top of a piece of fused glass before firing it in a kiln, and when it comes out, it will be fused into the glass permanently.
