How to Cut a Sink Hole in a Countertop
- 1). Place the counter top on two sawhorses upside down with the raw wood side facing upwards. The area where the sink will go should be placed in the middle of the sawhorses.
- 2). Lay the sink template onto the counter top and place in the position where the sink will go. Make sure that you trace the template so that it will appear the correct position both horizontally and vertically on the other side for plumbing connections.
- 3). Tape the template to the counter top. Trace around the template with a pencil while holding the template in place so that it does not move.
- 4). Drill a 3/8-inch hole inside of the pencil line so that the edge of the hole touches the pencil line. It is best to start at any corner and drill the hole on the inside of the template circumference or pencil line. Drilling a hole outside the perimeter of the pencil line results in a space between the counter top material and the sink. Remove the drill bit and set aside.
- 5). Insert a jigsaw into the 3/8-inch hole and start cutting around the pencil line.
- 6). Either use a board to prop up the piece of counter top that will release from the entire piece or have a helper support the piece with their hands from underneath. The helper should keep both hands on the piece in the center and hold it up so it does not rip the counter top.
- 7). Set the counter top in position on the kitchen or bathroom cabinet right side up. Place the sink in the hole to make certain that it fits properly before installing the sink.
