How to Pay Back Overpayment of Social Security Benefits
- 1). Determine that overpayment has occurred and that the overpayment amount is correct. Social Security will notify you of any overpayment. If, however, you notice that an overpayment has been made, contact the Social Security department at (800) 772-1213. There are several options for repayment.
- 2). Request that the full benefit amount be withheld from your monthly Social Security benefit payment. For a reduced amount, contact Social Security in writing to request a lesser withholding amount. The withholding schedule will begin 30 days after the overpayment is confirmed and the withholding amount is agreed upon. If an alternative withholding amount is not requested, the Social Security department will withhold the full amount.
- 3). For Supplemental Security income (SSI), the Social Security department will withhold 10 percent of the monthly benefit amount. Alternate withholding amounts can also be requested. For a greater or lesser amount, contact the Social Security department with a summary of your expenses and reason(s) for the lesser (or greater) amount. The Social Security department will begin withholding the money 60 days from notification of the overpayment.
- 4). Pay the Social Security department by check within 30 days. This option is available to persons no longer receiving Social Security benefits. Contact the Social Security department before making the payment.
