How to Clean the Registry on a Computer
- 1). Decide how you will clean the registry. There are two ways to clean the registry on a computer--manually or using registry cleaning software. Most people should use automated software and leave the manual editing to highly experienced PC professionals.
- 2). Download a registry cleaning program such as CClean. These programs are typically free and take up only a few megabytes on the hard drive.
- 3). Open the registry cleaning program and select the option that allows you to back up the registry. Do this first, before you make any changes. This will ensure that you can salvage your original settings should something bad happen.
- 4). Next, start the registry scan. Depending on the program that you are using, this option may have several different names, but most of the registry cleaning programs available make it pretty intuitive as to how to begin the process.
- 5). After you have run the registry cleaning scan, it is time to fix any issues your registry cleaner may have found. If you have not selected an option that tells the registry cleaner to do so, when it asks if you would like to "fix issues" click on yes. The process should take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.
