Preschool Bugs & Insects Crafts
- Have preschoolers make magnets based on their favorite insects. Give children pieces of colored foam. They can first cut out the body shape from one piece of foam, then cut antennae, wings or any other body parts other pieces of foam. Have them glue the pieces together to create the insect's body, then glue googly eyes onto the head. Once the glue is dry, glue a magnet to the bag of the insect. Send the magnets home so children can hang them from the refrigerator.
- Talk with preschoolers about the different environments where insects live, using books to help you. Have children draw pictures of different environments such as rain forests or deserts, or draw these environments yourself and pass out a copy to each child. Have children draw insects into the environments where they would live. To make things easier for young preschoolers, have children create the environments by making collages out of magazine pictures. Draw the types of insects that would live in each place, then have children cut them out and glue them on.
- Children can use their artistic skills while also learning about insects. Give children lumps of clay or play dough. They can knead several drops of food coloring into the clay or dough if they want to change the color. Have children shape the clay into the shape of an insect, then pass out pieces of wire and pipe cleaners. Children can press these pieces into the clay to form antennae, legs and wings. When the clay dries, let children paint their creations.
- Once you've talked with children about the parts of insects, enlist them to become "Insect Investigators." Give each child a magnifying glass, notebook and markers. Take everyone outside and have children spread out and find bugs to investigate. Bring a digital camera outside with you so you can take photos of whatever bugs your students find. Children can also examine each insect under the magnifying glass, then draw pictures of it in their notebooks. Print your photos, then have children make collages out of their drawings and your photos of the actual insects.
