When you are short of space in your house but do have a garden, building your own wooden garden shed is the perfect solution.
Maybe you think you will not be able to do so yourself, but really it is quite simple with the correct tools, building plans and some patience.
The end result may well be the envy of your neighbors, friends and family! When you are going to build your own garden shed, follow the following tips which are very useful to avoid wasting time and materials (= money!):
  • Define the use(s) of your garden shed: garden tools shed, boat shed, car shed, office shed, bicycle shed or other(s).
Each specific use will determine the size of your garden shed and the general layout and design.
  • Get yourself a detailed building plan for your shed (or make it yourself if you can).
There are many resources on the Internet to obtain high quality and clear building plans.
  • Define where to build your garden shed, depending on the type of shed you are going to build.
For example, if it will be a boat shed, easy access from the street will be very important!
  • Select a place with not too many trees close by as their roots might damage over time your foundation!
  • Select the type of foundation you will use (depending, among others, on the soil conditions).
Options are: concrete foundation or a wooden foundation.
  • If you are in a an area with lots of rain you might do well to build your shed a little above ground level using concrete or wooden pillars.
  • Study your building plan with care and prepare a full list of all the materials you will need and which tools will be required to do the actual building.
  • Make a cost estimation of all the materials needed and tools you'll need to buy (some larger tools you might more cheaply rent for the days you will need them!).
  • Ifyour budget does not allow the inversion, make changes to your design to make it less costly (smaller size, less windows, other roofing materials and so on).
  • Get all the materials you need ready before starting actual construction as this will prevent delays.
  • Get yourself a friend to help you with the construction!
Taking care of these tips will make it far easier to build your perfect garden shed and make it a real success!
