Purple Cake Trends

Purple is an absolutely lovely color that has sometimes been overlooked or even avoided in cake design in the past. There was actually a practical reason for not using purple in large amounts on a cake because along with true black and deep red it was almost impossible to create without completely saturating the gum paste, icing or fondant with paste or liquid food coloring. Today cake designers can purchase tinted products in vibrant bright shades of purple which eliminates the issue of too much food coloring. There are many ways to use purple on cakes effectively depending on what your taste is and what theme you have picked for the wedding.

Purple Accents

Sometimes a touch of bright purple is absolutely perfect on an all white cake or to add punch and interest to other colors on the cake. Since purple is such a strong color a little goes a long way! Tiny fluttering butterflies, delicate violets or lilacs or pretty fondant bows are great accents on cakes for those brides who crave purple.

Purple Piping

Purple piped icing on a white cake along with a profusion of purple flowers is a gorgeous effect because the purple stands out so much on a light background. it is important to be very confident about your piping skills when creating this type of design because purple leaves no room for error in its bold presentation. Make sure you practice your design elements on a counter or plate before applying it to the cake as well. Once you pipe the icing on it might stain the white depending on how much coloring you used to create the purple color.

Light Purple

Lavender, amethyst, lilac or mauve are all wonderful soft light purple shades that go along with most other colors. These soft pastel hues are utterly charming for any wedding theme and you can use them to cover the entire cake with no jarring impact. These light colors are easier to create as well using very little gel color paste mixed into your fondant or icing.

Deep Purple Fondant

If you are a bold bride who is not afraid of bucking tradition then a cake covered completely in a true deep purple can be an idea for you. If you want an entirely purple cake it is a good idea to keep the accent decorations or piping to a minimum or the cake can be overwhelming. Simple white flowers scattered on top or a lovely string or pearls border can complete the cake perfectly.

Purple Iced Cupcakes

Cupcakes are still a pretty convenient trend for weddings and it is a lovely choice to ice them in swirls of purple butter cream. For some reason those splashes of bold color are not too much when applied to cupcakes rather than a whole cake. You can alternate the purple icing with other colors or white for a more intricate look or add purple to the cupcake stand or serving plate.

Purple Flowers

One of the most spectacular ways to add purple to a wedding cake is with an array of flowers such as lilies, pansies, hydrangea, lilacs, violets, gladiolas and other blooms. These can be made from gum paste or real depending on whether they are edible and are sourced from a reputable organic grower.
