How to Grid a Drawing
- 1). Draw an even grid on the picture that you want to copy using a medium hardness pencil and a ruler. The pencil is easily erasable and should be no problem to remove from the picture later on. It is crucial to get a grid that is the right size; because a grid that is too small won't have enough detail; and one that is too large will require too much drawing in each square.
- 2). Create another grid on a different piece of paper or canvas, using the pencil and ruler. The grid can either be the same size, or it can be made larger or smaller, to change the size of the picture.
- 3). Cover the majority of the picture, and only copy a few of the squares at a time, when drawing the new picture. Pay attention to every detail, as you make a copy of your picture. Pay attention to the space left between outside lines and the lines of the grid. By recognizing the shapes that are formed by the drawing and the grid lines, you can create the lines of the image more easily.
- 4). When the drawing is complete, go back and erase the grid on both images. You will have to patch the missing lines that result from the erasing.
