How to Make a Peace Symbol out of Sterling Silver Wire
- 1). Draw a peace symbol on a sheet of butcher paper. Start with a circle, and then draw a vertical line exactly down the center. Find the center of that vertical line, and draw two downward diagonal lines from each side of that point. Use a protractor and a straight edge if you aren’t great at drawing shapes freehand. You could also outline a plate, the bottom of a mug or another circular object to create a perfect circle.
- 2). Uncoil the sterling silver wire from its spool, and line the circle of your peace sign design with the wire. Work on a hard, flat surface to assure your work stays perfectly even. Snip the wire with flush cutters where they overlap after surrounding the circle completely.
- 3). Cut another three sections of wire; one should match the length of the vertical line, while the other two should match the length of the downward pointing lines. Position all the pieces together on top of a soldering block.
- 4). Dab a bit of flux onto the tip of your paintbrush, and then apply it in between each spot that the wire pieces meet. Heat the flux with your torch to melt it.
- 5). Snip six small squares of solder from the sheet. The squares should be no wider than the width of your wire. Grasp these squares with tweezers and place one over each peace sign joint.
- 6). Apply heat to the silver with your torch to melt the solder. Don’t apply heat to the solder itself; the heated silver will evenly melt the solder, which will flow into the joints. As soon as you see the solder melt, remove the torch’s flame from the silver.
- 7). Drop the piece in cool water to immediately quench the solder. Wipe the work dry, and smooth any imperfections with the file to complete your sterling silver wire peace sign.
