How to Attach Grab Bars to Drywall
- 1). Mark the area where you want to anchor the grab bar with a pencil. Be precise. You can accomplish this by taking the grab bar, holding it up, and positioning it on the exact area where you want to install it. Level it with a leveling ruler. The grab bar has what's called "flange covers" on it. These are the round covers on the right and on the left side of the grab bar where the lag bolt mounting holes are located. Simply align the grab bar to the drywall surface.
- 2). Attach a hole saw to your drill. The size of the hole saw depends on the size needed to fit the snap toggle or special fastener through the drywall. Measure this area for precision. You do not want to drill a hole into the drywall larger than needed or you will have to patch the holes with plaster and start over.
- 3). Drill a hole into the drywall for each side of the flange cover. Place the snap toggles through the flange cover mounts and insert through the holes in the drywall. You will hear a snap when the fasteners open up inside the cavity of the drywall. The toggles will pull against the back of the drywall for support.
- 4). Pull on the grab bar several times to make sure it is secure.
