Five Methods For Dealing With Stress And Anxiety The Natural Way

Anxiety is a normal response to a crisis or stressful situation. But some people struggle with it all the time, not only when they are in a tough situation. For these people, methods of controlling anxiety, especially those that don't use drugs, can allow themselves to return to a happier state of being.

1. Recognize situations that cause stress, and evaluate whether you truly need to be in them. Sometimes there is no avoiding stress, such as if your job is very stressful but you need to pay the bills. However, if something that you are doing voluntarily is stressing you out, consider whether it is worth it. People often feel like once they've started on something, they can't give up, but if your weekly dance class is causing you to be anxious all the time, giving it up can be the healthiest choice.

2. Get enough sleep. People who don't sleep at least 8 hours a night often find that they have a lower tolerance for dealing with stress. A well-rested body is much better equipped to allow you to remain calm and deal healthily with the stress in your life.

3. Start exercising. Exercise produces chemicals in the brain that relieve anxiety, and even moderate amounts can be helpful. Instead of vegging in front of the TV when you are trying to calm down, go for a twenty minute walk. Regular exercise is good for you, both body and mind, and can help you deal with problems in your life.

4. Take some 'me' time to do something relaxing. Often, people have so many responsibilities in their lives that they don't spend any time on themselves. It may seem selfish, but if spending an afternoon at the movies with friends, or an evening in the bubble bath with a book helps you be more relaxed, your family and work will benefit, too.

5. Eat better, and cut down on your caffeine intake. Often, eating high amounts of sugar and caffeine can make people feel jittery. Eating a more balanced diet that is lower in sugar and coffee, energy drinks or soda can make you feel calmer, if this is a problem for you.

Anxiety is a normal and natural reaction to stressful events and situations. But when it starts invading your life beyond the realm of difficult situations, you need to do something about it. Controlling anxiety without drugs is quite possible and many people find these methods very effective.
