Screen and Screening

106 6
Definition: A screen (noun) is used to sieve clays and other raw ceramic materials. The process of doing so is called screening (verb).

Screen size is very important, as some materials need to be very fine and others must be between a certain size. Screen size is generally reported as a simple number indicating how many openings in the screen there are per linear inch. The larger the number, therefore, the smaller the particle size.

Examples: 30/80 grog refers to grog that is fine enough to go through a screen with 30 openings per inch, but large enough it cannot go through a screen with 80 openings per inch. (noun)

Screening grog this way ensures the best particle size for use in both hand building and throwing clay bodies. (verb)
