Someone close to you is trying to cope with a death in the family.
Your pen is poised to write a warm personal note inside of a carefully-chosen sympathy card.
But your brain freezes.
Your mind is more sterile than a modern day operating room.
What can you possibly write? The card already says you're sorry and "with sympathy.
" What else is left? Relax.
Like notes of the musical alphabet, the letters of the literary alphabet offer unlimited possibilities for demonstrating your care and concern.
Here are some sympathy wording ideas to get your pen in high gear.
Say how you will remember the person.
Use sympathy wording like this: Your father was one of the most humorous men I've had the pleasure of knowing.
I will forever remember his one-of-a-kind laugh.
Note how this phrasing not only shows that you will remember the person - but also personalizes the message by referring to a specific trait - i.
e.
his unique laugh.
Say how sad you are.
Use words of condolence like this: Losing your mother is one of the hardest experiences in life.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Say you're thinking of them.
Use sympathy wording like this: Please know you and your family will be close in our thoughts in the coming days and weeks.
Say you care.
Use sympathy messages like this: I care about you and the deep pain of loss you must be feeling.
With fondness and love...
your neighbor Beth.
Say you'll help.
Use sympathy wording like this: As your friend, I want you to know I am here for you during this sad time in your life.
Anytime you need a shoulder, mine's available.
Remember when writing offers of help, tailor the offer to the personality of the person.
If the person is someone likely to reach out for themselves, then make the offer more open-ended as in the example above.
If the person is someone more likely to need guidance and direction, then make the offer more specific as in: I know this is a bad time to be without a car.
I will call tomorrow to arrange a time when we can talk about getting your car fixed.
By creating a personal message with carefully-chosen sympathy wording, you can comfort and support others during their time of need.
Just follow these tips and your pen should soon be flowing with warm words of sympathy and love.
