The very name emergency light has the connotations of a redeemer or helper. In reality too, an emergency light is something that comes to the aid of a person in all sorts of circumstances. Even before the advent of battery-powered torches, people have carried some form of lighting equipment to help through difficult situations, especially during night.

Emergency light as a standby against power failure can be permanently plugged in at homes and offices. Manufacturers even offer many color choices in these lights to make matching easy with the rest of the home dcor. A power failure emergency light stands in a charging cradle in a way similar to a telephone, and has got a sensor that activates it when power fails. It automatically comes on in case of a disruption in normal power supply. It can be removed from the cradle and the light will get switched off when it is replaced in the cradle. Such a power failure emergency light may have a strobe-flashing feature as well.

An emergency light can also be a very thin chemical glow stick that can be charged to last 12 hours. It will be waterproof, will not generate any heat or anything noxious, and will be available in more or less all rainbow colors. There are also smaller ones that last 8 hours or 6 hours. While these tiny lights are used more for entertainment purposes, those who go hiking, trekking, backpacking, or camping also carry them a lot.

At the other end of emergency light varieties, there are lights requiring 3 D batteries, much more than a foot in length, and weighing more than 2 pounds with batteries, that it can be a perfect assault weapon. Powered by large clusters of LEDs, its blinding flash will also be sufficient to momentarily disorient a person.

An emergency light made of super bright LED lights also come incorporated into a dog's leash nowadays to make it easier for the master to take a walk with his pet. The light can be detached when it may not be necessary, as when taking the dog out during daytime. Besides the emergency light, such leashes may have many addenda like waste bag dispenser, used bag holder etc.

An emergency light that the police carry is a savior not just during night but during much of the day as well since they are often forced to search for things in dark cellars or underground crypts or beneath parked vehicles without moving it. Besides that, the emergency light that police use could come modified into actual weapons as well. A pepper spray is incorporated into some emergency lights so that the policeman can use it against an assailant in a split second in the guise of focusing the light on him.

Far ahead of a pepper spray incorporated emergency light are flashlights that incorporate into it the ability of a high voltage stun gun which discharges with a powerful sound and easily knocks off the assailant. An emergency light that can be flipped open to become a machine gun in a second is also being developed.
