How to Crochet a Double-Stitch Baby Blanket
- 1). Tie a slip knot in the yarn around the crochet hook. This will be counted as the first loop in your chain.
- 2). Loop the tip of the hook once around the leading end of the yarn and pull it through to create a second loop.
- 3). Continue crocheting a single chain until it is your desired width for the blanket. Usually this would be about 30 inches. Be sure that the number of chains on your first row is divisible by the number 3 because you will be looping into every third chain when making a double crochet on the following rows.
- 4). Count how many loops you created in this first chain and be sure that you create the same number of double crochets for each additional row in the blanket. If you accidentally skip a loop or add too many in a row, your blanket will come out misshapen.
- 1). Flip the singe chain around in your palm and wrap the leading end of the yarn over the hook from the back side so that it loops around the hook. This is called "yarning over." At this point you should have 2 strands of yarn over the hook.
- 2). Insert the hook into the third chain on the first row so that you now have three loops of yarn over the hook.
- 3). Grab the leading end of the yarn with the hook and pull it through all three loops, over the hook, so that you only have one loop left. This is called a double crochet.
- 4). Continue the double crochet on every third chain on the first row until you reach the end of the second row.
- 5). Create two chains at the end of this row and flip the piece over in your palm. The top of your second row should appear to be a single chain row that is connected by two loops to the first chain row with the exact number of chains that you started your blanket with.
- 6). Continue a double crochet across your third row, along the chains of your second row until you reach the end.
- 7). Repeat steps 5 and 6 above until your blanket is at your desired length.
- 8). Tie off your yarn at the end of the last row by looping the leading end of the yarn through the last chain loop and pulling it completely through the loop. Cut it off with scissors. This will close the last loop when pulled tight and prevent the blanket from unraveling.
