Chlorine Pool Chemicals & Flammability
- Sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, muriatic acid, sodium bicarbonate and trichloroisocyanuric acid are some of the most common pool chemicals. Each of these chemicals has different properties and characteristics. None of these chemicals are flammable. However, that does not mean that they are safe.
- Mixing pool chemicals with each other or with other chemicals can cause violent reactions. Muriatic acid is a strong acid and highly corrosive, while calcium hypochlorite can react with acids to release toxic chlorine gas. Improper mixing of pool chemicals is a common cause of accidents and injuries. Always read the Material Safety Data Sheets or instructions that come with pool chemicals when you purchase them to make sure you are aware of possible hazards.
- While pool chemicals may not be flammable in and of themselves, they can react violently with flammable materials like gasoline, oil and solvents. Manufacturers recommend that pool chemicals be stored separately from each other, so that they do not mix, and kept well away from any flammable materials.
