How to Hook Up Hoses to a Pool Pump
- 1). Connect the pool pump to the filter housing. Look for the pump discharge opening (where the water leaves the pump) and connect it to the filter housing inlet. Usually this is a screw-on type of connection. If it is, apply plumber's tape to the male end of the connection prior to tightening it.
- 2). Attach a pool hose from the filter outlet to the pool inlet. This is the part of the system where the clean water leaves the filter housing and goes back into the pool. If your hoses are of the clamp-on type, stick the open end of the hose in hot water for five to 10 seconds. Doing so makes the hose more pliable and easier to attach to the inlet and outlet.
- 3). Affix a hose from the pool skimmer basket to the pump intake. The intake is located right in front of the pump basket.
- 4). Open the air valve on the filter housing. Pool filters and pumps work in a vacuum environment. During the connection process, a lot of air enters the filtration system. By opening the air valve, you give the air a place to escape when you turn on the filter.
- 5). Confirm that there is water in the pool pump basket. Pool pumps are self-priming, but need water in the basket to do this. When you connected the hose from the skimmer to the pump basket, water should have entered the pump basket. If that did not happen, open the lid at the top of the pump basket to let the water run into the basket and then shut the lid tight.
