How to Make a Hole-Spacing Template for Shelf Building

    • 1). Take a section of 1/4 inch lumber and cut it so that it is the same size as the poles you are using to build your shelves. The template should have some rigidity to it, which is why the 1/4 inch plywood will work well. Anything thinner could be too flimsy and apt to wobble.

    • 2). Look at the plans for the shelves you are building to determine where you will put the holes on your template.

    • 3). Measure and mark the locations of the holes on the piece of ply you are using as a template. It is important to be as accurate as possible in shelf building, so your shelves are all even and level.

    • 4). Bore the holes into the template where you have marked, and make sure there is no excess wood in the holes. If you make a mistake, simply get another piece of ply and start again.

    • 5). Hold the template on the post you are using when you are shelf building and drill the holes into the posts. Thanks to your template, you have saved yourself the bother of marking all the individual posts you need for the shelves.
