How to Resurface a Pool Patio

    • 1). Measure the area to be resurfaced using a measuring tape. Calculate your square footage -- length times width -- before buying the resurfacing materials. Take your calculations with you to purchase the supplies.

    • 2). Sweep or use a leaf blower to remove all surface dust and debris from the patio. Power-wash the patio to remove surface stains and loose concrete bits. Mix enough patching compound to repair any existing imperfections in your cement surface. Trowel the compound on smoothly and allow to set and dry.

    • 3). Apply etching compound to the surface using your paint roller. This will rough up the surface for better adhesion of your concrete topping or rubber overlay. Allow to dry.

    • 4). Place self-adhesive stencils in the area that will be patterned. This step is not necessary if you are using a concrete stamp or prefer a non-patterned finish.

    • 5). Change roll and paint tray in preparation for the application of your finished surface. Roll on your polymer modified concrete topping or pattern rubber overlay. If using stencils, remove them before the finished surface has completely dried. If using a concrete stamp, work from an inside wall out to the perimeter of the patio, stamping the surface as you apply the top coating. Allow the area to dry 24 to 72 hours before use. For the pattern rubber overlay, add an additional three to four days curing time before placing heavy objects on the surface.
