How to Make a Fabric Awning

    • 1). Position the 1-by-1 inch piece of wood on the outside wall of your house where you want to attach the awning. For example, you can attach the awning just above a sliding glass door or in front of a window.

    • 2). Attach the wood to the house using the drill and screws. Space the screws about 12 inches apart. The type of screws you use depends on what you are drilling into. If your house is brick, use masonry screws. If you are drilling into the wooden frame above a door, use deck screws.

    • 3). Twist one screw eye into the wood on both ends. Attach the remaining two screw eyes to the wood, spacing them evenly apart.

    • 4). Position four of the grommets along the 60-inch wide edge of the fabric. Arrange the grommets so that they line up with the screw eyes on the wood when you bring the fabric against the wood. Cut a small hole for each grommet. Set the grommets by taking them apart and placing one half under the fabric and the other half on top. Hammer the grommet pieces together to secure them.

    • 5). Position the remaining two grommets in the corners of the fabric on the opposite 60-inch wide edge. Attach them to the fabric using the same method used in step 4.

    • 6). Twist one screw eye into the top of each wooden pole. Hook the screw eye on each pole into the grommet in the corners of the awning fabric.

    • 7). Hook the four grommets along the edge of the fabric to the screw eyes on the piece of wood.

    • 8). Stretch out the fabric so that the two wooden poles are upright and the awning is taut. Have a friend hold the poles in place.

    • 9). Dig a small, 10 inch deep hole into the dirt at the base of each pole. Push the poles in the holes and fill in with the dirt. If you don't have dirt ground, fill two plastic bags with heavy rocks or sand and slide the poles into the bags. Tie the handles to hold the poles in place.
