How to Paint Your Kitchen Walls Black

    • 1). Clean the walls with dish detergent, water and a rag. Even if the walls are already clean, you should wipe them down to remove any thin layers of chemical cleaning residue that might be left by your normal kitchen cleaning products.

    • 2). Protect trim, cabinet and kitchen counter surfaces with plastic sheets and painter's tape.

    • 3). Apply tinted primer to the kitchen walls. Prime the edges with a paintbrush, then prime main surfaces using a roller. Black paint and other dark colors take extra coats for adequate coverage. However, tinted primers cut down on the number of necessary coats, saving you time and money on paint supplies. Wait for the primer to dry.

    • 4). Paint the walls with black oil-base paint. Latex paint is used for most home surfaces, but moisture-rich kitchen and bathroom environments should always be painted with oil-base paint. Paint the edges using a brush first, then roll paint on the main surfaces. Beginning with edge-work is called "cutting in," and this leads to a smoother finish.

    • 5). Paint a second coat after the first coat dries. Black paint almost always takes at least two coats, even with tinted primer.
